🍿 Dune: Part 2

Dune: Part 2 is a good movie, let me just start by saying that.

But this probably doesn't come across as a surprise because... well, the whole world is talking wonders about Denis Villeneuve's latest movie.

I have to say... I did not love the first Dune movie. It was okay, but I had a really hard time not falling asleep the two times that I've seen it.

It was slow, suffered from some serious pacing issues, and quite frankly, it was just rather boring at times.

And before you come back to me saying something along the lines of 'you just don't know how to watch good, elaborate cinema'.

Son... I loved Oppenheimer. But Dune: Part I was just boring.

Dune: Part II suffers from some of the same issues that Part I had towards the beginning of the movie.

It starts off pretty nicely, but then it tries to walk you through the complicated Game of Thrones-ish plot that it has to explain to you in two and a half hours. And quite frankly, it just doesn't work sometimes.

When I walked out of this movie, I honestly questioned if Dune would have been better served as a TV show rather than a three-part movie. Oh, yes, there's another one coming.

And look... These movies you really need to watch two, three, perhaps even four times to grasp everything that motivates each main character to do what they do and to act in the way they act. And I'm pretty sure that even after that, you may still question what the hell is going on.

Now... Let's talk about some of the things I loved.

The cast is amazing. From Zendaya, who is the absolute star of this film, to Javier Bardem, who was already great in Part I.

Austin Butler is a fantastic, grotesque villain who unfortunately doesn't get enough screen time.

Timothée Chalamet is great too as Paul Atreides once again. I did connect much more with him in this movie than I did in the first one.

The cinematography is top-notch, and Hans Zimmer is great too. I felt like the score worked much better in this movie than in Part I, though everyone seemed to have loved that one too.

All in all, this was a good movie that I would honestly encourage you to watch in a theater if you can.

Is this a masterpiece? Well, I don't think Paul Atreides is Luke Skywalker, and I don't think Dune: Part II will be remembered as The Empire Strikes Back of the 21st century like Christopher Nolan said.

But hey, it's still a fun watch!

Overall score: 7.5/10 🍿

🪰 Rotten, didn't like it     🍿 Fun, give it a watch     🍅 Fresh, loved it!
